Staying in an 18th-century palace means stepping into a history book, traveling back in time with every step. This is especially true if the building is located in the historic center of Bologna, surrounded by streets and monuments that, like clues scattered along an unmissable route, tell the story of a city with which the palace continues to share a deep cultural bond. The Grand Hotel Majestic “formerly Baglioni” is a veritable museum and houses priceless treasures such as the first known work by the Carracci, the Camerino d’Europa. Staying at the Majestic therefore means being able to choose, to lull your dreams, a suite with a unique history.

The elegance of a noble palace

Each suite has its own history and distinctive style, welcoming guests with its unique character. Many of the Majestic’s suites are located on the first floor, also known as the piano nobile. This detail alone hints at the building’s origins: the piano nobile is typical of the noble palaces and villas of the past and served as the actual residence of the owners, the lords of the palace, with bedrooms and rooms for the use of the ruling family. This is where reception rooms were located and where high-ranking guests were welcomed. The suites on the piano nobile are all dedicated to historical figures from Emilia-Romagna, often linked to Bologna and the hotel’s history: Giambologna, the pseudonym of the Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne, who created the famous Fountain of Neptune in Bologna during the second half of the 16th century, adjacent to Piazza Maggiore; Giuseppe Verdi, the composer who symbolizes Risorgimento Italy and was of Emilian origin; and Giorgio Morandi, a native of Bologna and a leading figure in 20th-century painting.

A Tour of the Majestic’s Suites

Let’s take a look at the Junior Suites: spanning 50 square meters and fully renovated, they reflect the elegance of 18th-century French style, with harmonious and elegant details. The fabrics feature original patterns, the decor is in warm tones, and the bathrooms are finished in fine white marble. A predominant color has been chosen for each one, giving them a unique personality. Upon entering the Giambologna Presidential Suite, we can admire the original dressing table used by Lady Diana during her stay at the Majestic.  The suite was created by combining two of the most beautiful and historic rooms in the classic Venetian style: in the sleeping area, there is a semi-canopied double bed and walls lined with fine fabrics, as well as two elegant display cabinets housing delicate porcelain and original Victorian-era English silverware. The two bathrooms are clad in Carrara marble. The living area, on the other hand, is furnished with French antiques.

Also on the main floor is the Giuseppe Verdi Presidential Suite, one of the most exclusive, overlooking Via dell’Indipendenza. The spacious entrance leads into an elegant French-style sitting room, featuring elegant display cabinets and walls upholstered in fine fabric. Every detail is designed to offer the utmost comfort: from the king-size bed to the walk-in closet that opens onto the bathroom, finished in rare black marble, with a double sink and a Jacuzzi. The Presidential Suite can be transformed into a Royal Suite, with two separate bedrooms for a fairytale stay. Parquet flooring on one side, marble on the other, and more precious velvets, regal armchairs, antique fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and a bar area complete the ambiance.

Finally, via a dedicated elevator, we ascend to the fifth floor, the top level of the building, entirely reserved for the Art Deco Terrace Suite, featuring a style that is quite distinctive and unique within the hotel: every detail evokes the Art Deco of the 1930s, from the two bedrooms in shades of black and silver-gray to the bathrooms clad in black-and-white Carrara marble with silver accents. From the spacious living room with a bar area, we step out to admire the terrace, which offers a unique view of Bologna and a special perspective on the Church of San Pietro and the surrounding hills. A true gem.
