The Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni” is hosting ‘Mostra di una Notte’, an event forming part of ART CITY Bologna to coincide with ARTEFIERA, which celebrates the historic link between the hotel and Giorgio Morandi. For 12 hours, two masterpieces by the great Bolognese artist will engage in a dialogue with a contemporary work inspired by him.

Free entry upon booking, with a voluntary donation in support of the ANT Foundation. Saturday 4 February from 2 pm to 2 am

The event
To open the event, art historian Beatrice Buscaroli will explore Morandi’s artistic legacy and recount the origins of this exhibition. The exhibition evokes the Futurist ‘blitz’ that Filippo Tommaso Marinetti organised in the hotel’s basement in 1914: the painter’s first public showcase.

The exhibition
In the Gallery on the basement level, where a Roman road from the Imperial era (187 BC) lies, an oil on canvas from 1948 and a watercolour on paper from 1956 will be on display, alongside the work created by Riccardo “Corn79” Lanfranco, winner of the first edition of the Giorgio Morandi Sustainability Art Prize. The artist, Corn79, created the work following an artist’s residency in the Morandi region.

The Giorgio Morandi Sustainability Art Award
The award is sponsored by the Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni”, which, through this initiative, celebrates its deep connection with Giorgio Morandi and highlights a theme dear to all establishments within the Duetorrihotels Group: sustainability. This perspective is also shared by the award’s other sponsor, Confedilizia APE Bologna. Morandi can indeed be described as an “eco-modern” artist ahead of his time, an artist with a unique poetic vision, aware of the interactions between man and nature: an emblematic figure closely associated with a genuinely sustainable approach.

ABOUT GRAND HOTEL MAJESTIC "GIÀ BAGLIONI"

The hotel, which opened in 1912 at the height of the Belle Époque, is housed in an 18th-century building, just a short walk from Piazza Maggiore, in the heart of Bologna. Inside, it houses true treasures: on the main floor, you can admire the ‘Camerino d’Europa’, a 16th-century masterpiece and the first known work by the Carracci family, whilst in the basement, a section of the ancient paving of the Flaminia Militare, dating back to 189 BC, has been restored to its former glory and now hosts temporary exhibitions. The only 5-star luxury hotel in the city, the palace offers guests a truly immersive experience in the heart of Bologna. With its 106 rooms and suites in classic Venetian and 19th-century French styles, and its wellness area featuring a Health & Wellness centre and fitness corner, the hotel offers a welcome that embodies the very best of Italian craftsmanship. The hotel has long been a favourite with celebrities, artists and Hollywood stars: among its most famous guests was the founder of Futurism, Marinetti, who organised his famous 1914 ‘blitz exhibition’ here. The Café Marinetti, entirely in Art Deco style, with designer armchairs and sofas and a winter garden, is named after the artist. Upon entering Ristorante I Carracci, you take your seat in a 16th-century hall with ceilings decorated with frescoes from the school of the Carracci brothers, where you can savour regional cuisine and more. Enoteca Morandi is perfect for tastings and private dinners accompanied by a select range of Italian and international wines.
