Michelangelo and Bologna

Michelangelo and Bologna

|

From 14 November 2025 to 15 February 2026, Palazzo Fava hosts the exhibition “Michelangelo and Bologna”, a major tribute to the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti. Curated by Cristina Acidini and Alessandro Cecchi and promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna as part of the Genus Bononiae project, the exhibition explores the deep connection between the Renaissance genius and the city of Bologna.

Hotel

The exhibition retraces the artist’s stays in Bologna: from 1494, when he was commissioned to work on the Ark of Saint Dominic, to 1506, when he was called by Pope Julius II to create the bronze statue of the pontiff. Letters, documents, and original drawings are displayed alongside works by Ercole de’ Roberti, Francesco Francia, Lorenzo Costa, and Amico Aspertini, recreating the vibrant cultural atmosphere of Bentivoglio’s Bologna.

A dialogue between art, history, and spirituality that highlights Michelangelo’s human and creative relationship with the city and his masters, in a journey leading to the heart of the Renaissance.
